AGM Report

posted 13 Dec 2011, 06:35 by Steve Davies
This year, our AGM took on a new format.  As well as carrying out the formal business, we took the opportunity to show members and guests some of the work we have supported over the year.

Jane and the Respect in Bexley group presented from ‘The Studio’, complete with a Director.  They went ‘live’ to broadcasts from a number of locations, including Smerdon and Carlton centres, to hear from ‘correspondents’ in the field.  There was even time for a commercial break!  Janis Ball told of the work that Carers United have been doing over the last year, and Kathryn introduced two carers who wanted to share their experience of our Family Support Service.  Alan and Julie from the London Ambulance Service told of the significance of the work Respect had done in contributing to a training programme for London Ambulance staff and the way that other NHS Ambulance Services across the country were taking up the communication Book developed with Respect.  All that and a Toddy Tots playgroup meant that members and guests had a full day with a window on the world of Bexley Mencap.

At the end of the afternoon, John presented the Acting Chair’s report, Chris gave the Treasurer’s report and the Trustees and Officers were elected.  A new Chair, Wendy Turner, was appointed.  The Mayor of Bexley, Cllr. Ray Sams, spoke of the value of the work undertaken by Bexley Mencap and following the unanimous decision of the members to appoint Joan Morris as our new President following Mr. Boomla’s retirement, paid testimony to the work she had done for people with learning disabilities and their families over many years. The Mayor then presented Joan with an engraved coaster commemorating her service to Bexley Mencap.
