On Friday 27th May, Bexley Mencap’s self advocacy group, Respect in Bexley, met to discuss their concerns about the bus services in the local area. The group was joined by representatives from Bexley Speaking Up Group, the Bexley Safer transport Team and the local bus company. Respect in Bexley members gave a presentation of the work they had done highlighting safety issues for people with learning disabilities. They also reflected on the positive improvements at town centre bus stops as a result of the joint working between the bus companies, police and the Police Community Support Officers.

Commenting on the meeting, Jane Menzies, Bexley Mencap’s Self Advocacy Worker said ‘It’s really important that people have the confidence to know they can travel safely on the local bus network. Today’s meeting was a great opportunity for direct dialogue with those who can make that happen’. A spokesperson for the Bexley Safer Transport Team said ‘We really value events like today. We know that real improvements can be made when we work together. Respect in Bexley is one of our key partners in delivering a safer transport system in Bexley’.
