Talking About Benefits: Meeting the Minister

Many people we support are feeling worried about the Government’s plans to change disability benefits. These changes could have a big impact on people’s lives; especially people with a learning disability, long-term health needs and autisitic people.

That’s why we were very happy to host an important meeting in our office, bringing local charities together to speak directly to the Minister for Disabled People, Sir Stephen Timms, and Danial Francis MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford. The meeting was organised by BVSC (Bexley Voluntary Service Council), who brought together the Welfare Working Group in Bexley for this special conversation.

The meeting was part of the Government’s consultation called Pathways to Work: Reforming Benefits and Support to Get Britain Working. It gave us a chance to share real-life examples of how the changes could affect local people and to suggest solutions based on what our members tell us.

We were proud to share the views of our members and carers, including:

  • The need for better training for benefit assessors so they understand learning disability and autism.

  • Making assessments less stressful and clearer, which would also save time and money on appeals.

  • Making sure benefit letters follow the Accessible Information Standard, including using easy read for people who need it.

  • In-person support must still be available for people who cannot use the internet or digital systems.

  • Employers need more support and advice to understand the value of employing people with a learning disability.

  • Improving Access to Work, so people can get the right help, equipment and support to do their jobs well.

  • Carers Allowance must be protected, as many unpaid carers rely on this to keep going.

Everyone who took part gave honest and practical feedback, showing just how important it is to include the voices of small charities and people who may be affecting by changes in decisions about the benefits system.

We’ll continue to work with others to make sure the people we support are heard.
