Visit to House of Lords

Bexley Mencap and Respect Group member, Nimisha was invited to afternoon tea at the House of Lords with Baroness Sheila Hollins.

The occasion was to celebrate her being Highly Commended in a Colouring Competition run by Beyond Words.  The award followed a special ceremony as part of Mental Wealth Festival at City Lit adult education college in London last October. Art and colouring competition winners announced — Beyond Words

Beyond Words Book club co-creates word free picture stories for people with a learning disability. Jane Menzies, who leads the Respect Group says that members have really enjoyed running their own book club and it has helped to create a positive focus on the importance of good mental health and wellbeing for all.

Nimisha enjoys drawing and colouring often using elaborate multi-layered colouring schemes and patterns to create an amazing kaleidoscopic effect.
She is inspired by nature, animals, buildings and is also a dab hand at completing large jigsaw puzzles and model kits.

Nimisha said; ‘It was a lovely afternoon and great to meet the other award winners again. We waited in Westminster Hall and the Baroness came out to greet us and gave a little talk. Then we had a special guided tour of the Palace and sat down to have tea.’

When she’s not producing award winning artistic creations, Nimisha works part time as a sales assistant for a high street home, garden and DIY shop, so she’s a busy practical person with a creative flair, as well.

Her model interior of a house, made from everyday household objects, was selected to feature in a national multi-sensory collection, in association with The National Archive, entitled ‘My Home’.  ‘My Home’ with the National Archives – Bexley Mencap
