It was a busy last weekend in April with first a sponsored cliff top walk and then marathon fun! Both to raise money for Bexley Mencap’s work to support people with a learning disability and their carers and families.
On the Saturday, Jamie Menzies, and his son Samuel and daughter, Phoebe, walked the 21km path from Eastbourne to Seaford along the beautiful Seven Sisters National Park. Jamie is the brother of one of our team, Jane.
Jamie said; ‘It’s my 50th birthday that weekend and I thought I’d combine it with a walk with my teenage children and raise money for a good cause that’s close to my heart.’
Then, the next day, Nick Marsden ran the 45th edition of the London Marathon (A marathon is 26.2 miles) Nick leads Bexley Mencap’s Healthy Lifestyles programme of physical activities such as Tennis, Keep Fit, Walking Football and Gardening.
Nick said:
‘It was a hot day so I had to pace myself but I’m glad I kept running the whole way round. I’ve never drank so much water! It was great to be able to show the medal and t-shirt to our various groups later in the week. Along the way, I thought of Matt, one of our members, who ran over 100 parkruns with me, over a three year period. He’s an inspiration to all of us and it just shows what can be done once you start getting active.’
Matt’s 100th parkrun video can be found here.
Together, the walk and run raised £2,800 for Bexley Mencap! A big thank you to all those who contributed and support Bexley Mencap’s activities in any way.
